What is Labiaplasty?
Labiaplasty is a cosmetic surgery for women that reduces the size of the inner lips of the vagina. The labia minora (inner lips) can vary in length. The average length is 61 mm, but some women have labia up to 100 mm long.
Women often choose this surgery to reduce discomfort or improve appearance. Tight clothing can be uncomfortable for women with long labia.
How Popular is Labiaplasty?
I have performed over 150 labiaplasty procedures and have been featured on WBAL TV in Baltimore, as well as in the article “Something to Talk About.”
What problems does Labiaplasty address?
My labia shows thru my clothes
Labiaplasty helps women who are unhappy with the look and feel of their labia. Some women have long labia from birth. Others develop the problem after childbirth or as they age.
Common reasons for labiaplasty:
- Long or hanging labia
- Discomfort during activities or while wearing tight clothes
- Feeling self-conscious during intimacy
For women with a full mons pubis, a noticeable mound of fatty tissue above the pubic bone, liposuction can also be performed.
How is a Labiaplasty performed?
Labiaplasty should be performed by a board-certified plastic surgeon at an accredited surgery center or hospital. Although it is a cosmetic procedure, I have special experience in vaginal reconstruction from my time at Yale Plastic Surgery. I also authored a chapter on Vulvar Reconstruction in Obstetrics & Gynecology.
There are two main methods used for labiaplasty:
Trim Method:
The trim method removes excess skin along the edge of the labia minora. It is the most common technique and is my preferred method because it produces the best results with fewer complications. It’s ideal for patients who want to remove the darker, longer edges of the labia.
Wedge Method:
The wedge method removes a wedge-shaped section of the labia to reduce bulk. I do not use this method because it does not meet most patients' goals.
What Type of Anesthesia is Used?
I use IV sedation with a board-certified anesthesiologist for labiaplasty. This ensures that you are comfortable and not awake during surgery. My surgery center is QuadA accredited and Medicare certified for your safety.
The surgery takes about 1 to 2 hours. You will be in a light sleep and wake up shortly after the IV is removed. Most patients can go home about an hour after the procedure.
What are the preoperative requirements?
Before surgery, follow these steps to prepare:
- Stop smoking 2 weeks before surgery.
- Read the Informed Consent form. This document explains the risks of surgery.
- Stop taking multivitamins, herbal supplements, and aspirin 2 weeks before surgery.
- Get a medical clearance within 30 days of surgery.
- Schedule a pre-op appointment to review the plan and sign the consent forms.
- Fill your prescriptions before surgery.
- Do not eat or drink after midnight the night before surgery.
Make sure your surgeon is board-certified and that the surgery center is accredited.
What is Labiaplasty Post-Op recovery like?
After surgery, expect some swelling and discomfort. Most swelling goes down in the first week. The rest will go away within 6 weeks.
Post-Op Instructions:- First week: Rest and do Epsom salt soaks daily.
- First 3 weeks: No sexual activity.
- At 4 weeks: You can return to normal activities.
You will receive an inflatable cushion for sitting. We will also give you a sitz bath for post-op care. Most patients can resume sexual activity after 3 weeks.
If you live near Baltimore, you can go home the same day. If you live out of town, we recommend staying overnight in a nearby hotel.
What are the risks and possible complications?
As with any surgery, there are some risks, including:
- Infection
- Bleeding
- Changes in sensation
- Persistent pain
These risks will be discussed during your consultation and pre-op appointment. Be sure to ask any questions you may have.
How much does Labiaplasty cost?
The total cost for labiaplasty with IV sedation is $3,800. This includes the surgeon’s fee, operating room costs, anesthesiologist’s fee, and follow-up visits.
